EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EMMANUEL DE BAYSER

Office Ideas

Sometimes you just need to live for the art and today, we want to introduce to you an art enthusiast that swear by that principle: art curator and collector Emmanuel de Bayser. His international appeal – something he strongly strives for in his projects and in his daily life – is described by the double life he constantly lives, unable to chose between two of the most interesting in Europe: Paris and Berlin. Two cities, two apartments, multiple projects but one true love for art in all its forms and shapes. Aren’t you a little bit curious? Just keep reading.

We can just say he is a born and bred Parisian, in fact, most of his relatives are from the city of love, but he will never reveal his true preference; Paris and Berlin are like two different worlds colliding, like Emmanuel de Bayser itself admitted: “Paris means all the tradition and culture, and Berlin means being more adventurous, a bit more experimental, daring even”. That’s the reason why he is always going back and forward, not only between the cities but also between the different kind of project that he follows, an everyday metaphor of his art conception and fascination: the Berlin and Parisian apartments and the fashion store – The Corner Berlin – situated in the German capital. But we can perceive a connection between the different places and that’s the artistic feeling Emmanuel de Bayser wants to expose through his different life projects.

The love for mid-century art – not subtle at all – pervades everything. Even from the extensive collection of books on his German apartment’s library, we can perceive the allure the 50s and 60s have on his style. He lets himself be inspired by Jean Prouvé, Jean Royère, Jean-Michel Frank, Marc du Plantier, Georges Jouve, Diego Giacometti, Joseph Dirand, Jacques Grange, Pierre Yovanovitch and he is also influenced by the 19th-century, mainly Haussmannian architecture. His artistic culture comes from his heritage for sure: “There were artists and art dealers in my family, so I was surrounded by aesthetics—paintings, furniture, objects”.

The Berlin apartment, situated on Mitte’s Gendarmenmarkt, answers to every mid-century prayer: an alluring atmosphere – based on chromatic contrast such as black, white, and earthy colors and plays between different textures – created by Emmanuel de Bayser to immerse himself in a timeless setting, always researching personality in his artistic choices, “a story to be told”, without forgetting the aim for luxuries and comforts.

The space, often really reduced, has not become a problem for Emmanuel de Bayser and his passion in ceramics lets us understand the reasons: “I had to be interested in it because I had no place for furniture. So, I had to find a way of learning more about things I already owned!”. So, the apartment is a never-ending project, always evolving like art itself. Different art pieces, various influences, but always reminding the space of his true fancy: from the joyous pair of sheep sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne to French mid-century ceramicist Georges Jouve’s colorful ceramics and the chairs of Jean Prouvé; everything explores the long-time quest of his specific style.

The same attention to design and art object that seem to pervade both the apartments can be found into the store, where every piece has been chosen carefully, the same way its furniture has been chosen. Talking about his day job Emmanuel de Bayser said: “Every day, you receive beautiful new collections and merchandise that you must show off and celebrate. It has to be created, yes, but it’s not a museum… I have to sell them”.
