Jeff Jordan Architects Modernized A Mid-Century Home With Bay Windows
The architecture firm Jeff Jordan Architects based in New Jersey has renovated a mid-century home with glass windows, white flooring and cedar walls.
Jeff Jordan Architects updated a home in the Hudson Valley opening up the floor plan and adding floor-to-ceiling windows. The studio also continued to use modernist elements throughout, such as cedar walls and mid-century furnishings.
Hillcrest House is located in New York’s Hudson Valley. This area is popular for its rural landscape and vibrant art scene and urban dwellers enjoy the tranquility of the place.
The owners were drawn to the home’s original design and wooded site.
“They were less excited, however, with the underwhelming connection between the living space and the surrounding woods and the Hudson River beyond”
said Jeff Jordan.
Mid-century modern homes are characterised by an integration with nature and clean lines, and the updated Hillcrest House includes these features.
The existing interior was cramped and old-fashioned, from brick and wood paneling and bamboo floors to terra cotta tile. The new space by Jeff Jordan is uses only a handful of materials throughout, creating a airy atmosphere.
The most striking addition is the expansive glazed wall along the living and dining rooms, which calls to mind modernist homes like Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House.
Inside, a kitchen wall was ripped out and replaced with an island overlooking the living room. A second diving wall was removed, and replaced with a free-standing fireplace that divides the living and dining rooms.
White epoxy floors and white cabinets add a contemporary flair to the interior. Above, the ceiling has partially exposed support beams with a geometric design.
Jeff Jordan Architects are known for using wood in their construction.
