McMillen Inc, founded in 1924, is the first and longest-running full-service interior design firm in the United States. Founded by Drury McMillen, the firm is now lead by a strong team of experienced senior designers. They create a wide range of styles focusing on the highest-quality product available, avoiding trendiness, going to unique sources.
McMillen Inc quickly became a full-service decorating business by the end of 1920s, having completed jobs such as a Hunting Box in Southampton, New York, a suite of rooms on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston and a Salon in the Restoration Style for a 1927 Exhibit at the Grand Central Palaces in New York City – these projects have been described as historicist in terms of style.
This firm, by the end of World War II, emerged as the most well-known residential decorating firm in the USA. McMillen undertook two large and prestigious projects: the restoration of the Rosedown Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and a house for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford II in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, which was fully furnished with museum-quality French furniture and art, set against a background of 18th-century panelling and window treatments.
McMillen Inc has a list of highly satisfied customers, taking great pride in using the clients’ old curtains and upholstery, recontructing them anew. Always on the lookout for new clients and projects, McMillen Inc created a branch – McMillen Plus – to appeal to younger customers.
They also have a common aesthetic, emphasizing classicism, restraint, and personality. In the words of the founder, Eleanor McMillen Brown, “Respect the past, enjoy the present, look forward to the future.”
