Project UWS by Stadt Architecture Includes Custom-Made Furniture
Stadt Architecture studio renovated an apartment in Manhattan New York, using custom-made walnut flooring and furniture.
Founded in 2012, STADT Architecture studio has a mission: to provide a sophisticated yet attainable design approach. Their projects are made with every attention to the client and location needs, tailoring a unique solution for every single one of them.
The designers renovated an apartment in Manhattan New York, combining brick work walls, walnut floors and neutral finishes. The project, named as UWS Apartment, is located in the first floor of a 1970s condominium conversion in New York’s Upper West Side, and is split across three different levels.
The kitchen and dining room are placed on the lowest storey, while a set of steps lead to the lounge on the second floor. The floor above is occupied by the bedroom and bathroom areas. In its interior design, custom-made walnut flooring and furniture were placed to offer some cohesion between the separate spaces.
In the dining area, a narrow breakfast bar replaces the dining table.
Stadt studio opt to combine white cabinets with walnut wall panels to provide a brightening offset to the existing brickwork walls and establish a common visual language through the materials. A long set of cabinets runs along one of the lounge walls, featuring an open shelf lined in purple.
Neutral finishes in the lounge include the L-shaped sofa, lightweight white curtains and circular glass pendant lighting.
The studio also rearranged the mezzanine floor to create a larger bedroom and bathroom for the resident, a young professional.
To add extra storage to the space, the designers reconsidered the bed and headboard as both architecture and furniture.
Extra storage is built into the bed base, while the reconfiguration freed up space along the back wall for wardrobes.

The bathroom design also suffered some changes, the studio added 18 inches by replacing the existing straight staircase, with a version that dog-legs around the lift.
White tiles line the walls complementing the white bathroom suite, while the floor is covered with a graphic grey and white tile.
