MICHAEL S. SMITH

Having been the appointed redecorator of White House’s residential quartiers in 2008 and the mind behind the Oval Office’s makeover in 2010, interior designer Michael S Smith is the champion decorator capable of blending American modern style with the European classic one, inserting his personal elegant flair in every project.

Coming from California, Michael S. Smith studied interior design at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Eventually,  The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and then the designer worked under the tutelage. That was the famous antique dealer Gep Durenberger., therefore, to extend his knowledge in antiques.  After all, he moved to New York to work with John Saladino and only in 1993 he launched his design firm, Michael S. Smith Inc.

His signature style – that the same Michael S. Smith called “updated traditional”  is a revisiting of a contemporary style with vintage and original elements. Such as 18th-century Chinese wallpaper, Moroccan carpets, Georgian antiques mixed together with modern accessories.

The Jasper Collection and the Signature Lines – the first, his personal collection of fine furniture, fabrics, leathers, wallcoverings, and accessories that the American designer created. The second, collections that Michael S Smith designed for other big-name brands. That is the expression of the designer’s aesthetic concepts. Likewise, retaining the same appreciation for the past that is seen in every project. For instance, a blending of historical motifs, objects, and craftsmanship of the past. Together with the most modern and innovative trends.

As well as, the appreciation received for his projects made him a focal point in the interior design field. Likewise, a certainty when it comes to tastefully decorate a room: his Jasper Showroom – created to showcase bespoke collections from around the world. Projects allow customers to participate in a stylish shopping experience, to be witnesses of Michael S Smith’s own sense of refined craftsmanship and design evolution.

Besides, the native Californian, Michael S. Smith has received many awards. Overall, the designer has been named five times by Architectural Digest “AD100”, nominated “Designer of the year” by Elle Décor and featured among its A-List. Hence as a member of ASID he has joined the Board of Trustees of Otis College of Art and Design. Moreover, has co-chaired the American Friends of the Olympia International Fine Art and Antique Fair. In 2010, Michael S Smith has joined the Committee for the Preservation of the White House by President Obama’s request.
