Kelly Wearstler<\/strong> is an american designer known for her multifaceted, experiential residential, hospitality, commercial, and retail environments, as well as her extensive collections of lifestyle product designs.<\/p>\n

For this article, Insplosion<\/a><\/strong><\/em> introduces you to one of the big projects, the Santa Monica Proper Hotel<\/strong>. This hotel is a beach destination with a sophisticated sensibility. The city’s climate, history and iconography are the inspiration for the property’s identity and its inherent storytelling.<\/p>\n

The reception area features a hand-styled table with linework reminiscent of a seashell and a sand-infused plaster canvas. The reclaimed oak wood floor has an octagonal pattern inspired by a bird’s-eye view, while a bronze chain-link sculpture with a neon tube stands 9 feet tall.<\/p>\n

The Proper brand embodies a \u201clooser\u201d type of luxury design that incorporates local and surrounding culture in a way that appeals to long-term stayers and vacationers as well as holidaymakers.<\/p>\n

Kelly Wearstler drew inspiration from Santa Monica\u2018s classic history in designing the hotel, both visually and culturally, to emphasize a modern design. The public spaces feature eye-catching objects sourced from collaborations with L.A. artisans for original artwork and monolithic installations.\"Kelly<\/a><\/p>\n

A mix of new and old pieces makes for a layered aesthetic and a sense of the unexpected. In this boutique hotel, she has tamed her signature flair for eclectic materials and textures into a neutral palette.<\/p>\n

She scoured vintage stores to find the eclectic furniture that adorns the living room-style lobby of this hotel in California.<\/p>\n

The Santa Monica Proper features 271 guest suites spread across the landmark building and new construction. Wearstler chose wallpaper with deeper hues for some rooms and a muted, neutral color palette for the other rooms. The textiles and wall coverings are from the designer\u2018s own collection.<\/p>\n

The project was named Hotel of the Year in 2020 at the AHEAD Americas Hospitality Awards, winning in the Guest Rooms and Lobby & Public Spaces categories.<\/p>\n
