Discover Haf Studio’s project: Mat Bar in Reykjavík
See the story of Mat Bar: a stunning restaurant designed by local practice Haf Studio in Reykjavík, Iceland!
Haf Studio transformed a 1960s building in the Icelandic capital to create Mat Bar, which serves a combination of Italian and Nordic cuisine. The history of the original building, as well as the surrounding restaurants, provided the starting point for this inspiring design.
“We were inspired by the local cafes and bars, still in their original state since the 60s and wanted to recreate that friendly atmosphere where the interior design plays its role in bringing people closer together,” said the studio spoke person.
For the flooring, there were used bold monochrome tiles, mirrors with rounded edged for the walls and circular brass ceiling lights.
The Italian-Nordic concept behind Mat Bar is the brainchild of Guðjón Hauksson, who had previously worked in Italy.
Haf Studio‘s Hafsteinn Júlíusson said the fusion dishes on the menu also formed a key part of the studio’s design choices.
The bar has a green base and a golden top, which provides a continuation to the paintwork on the lower portion of the walls. The blackened metal shelved that are hanging down from the ceiling over the bar complete the exquisite eclectic design look!
The studio designer said that the theme of this interior restaurant is ‘Italy meets the Nordic’. The whole interior design look is a mix between the unique charm of Italy and Mediterranean area and the pragmatism of the North.
The furniture and the lighting pieces were custom-made by local craftsmen. The variety of styles are brought together through the use of different colors, textures and shapes make Haf Studio looking incredibly amazing!
