Norm Architects Create Dark Industrial Interior for Copenhagen Restaurant
Copenhagen-based studio Norm Architects opt for dark, warm materials and minimal tube lighting for the new venue Nærvær.
Founded in 2008, Norm Architects works in the fields of industrial design, residential architecture, commercial interiors and photography. The Copenhagen-based studio creates projects with total balance between richness and restraint, order and complexity. Often their work has the same intrinsic quality: a simplicity that carries bigger ideas.
Recently the studio was challenged to design the interior of the new venue Nærvær which is situated in a modern building in Copenhagen. The designers opt to use a selection of dark and warm materials that are combined with minimal tube lighting, resulting in a “intimate and cosy atmosphere”.
The wine bar has a view towards a nearby canal and the old city center beyond. Industrial aesthetic features raw concrete surfaces and exposed ventilation that is suspended from the ceiling.
Different tones and textures are introduced to the interior design, as a choice that complements the building’s industrial character. This creates a soften effect and simultaneously a more comfortable environment for the space.

Materials throughout are chosen for their natural, durable qualities and ability to improve with age and use. Decorative elements include specially commissioned crockery, bowls and Scandinavian vases.
The delicate yet industrial light fittings were designed by the Studio itself and are made from oil-burned steel frames and slender tubular diffusers. The result is a warm and gentle illumination.
Potted trees and plants introduce greenery into the bright, daylit spaces and complement the natural materials.
Nærvær by Norm Architects was covered in natural materials and industrial surfaces to match the mood of the place. A casual atmosphere with small spaces and niches for guests to enjoy.
